October 7 Meeting

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping
a present and not giving it.”
~ William Arthur Ward
Hello Perkins Families!
Let me start by saying that the PTA has an attitude of
gratitude this month. We are so grateful for the parent and
teacher participation at our October PTA meeting. Additionally,
on behalf of Perkins Elementary school we would like to thank
the volunteers who are working relentlessly behind the scenes to
ensure the success of the Fall Festival (Saturday October 25
from 11am-3pm)!
Before we delve into the summary of the October meeting, here is
a note on membership:
“A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to
take the helm.”
Ibsen
This
is your school, your children, your community-Take the helm!
Join the PTA!
·
The PTA membership drive ends on Friday October 31st!!!
·
The PTA has set the goal of 100% parent participation this
year.
·
Unlike the Fundamental schools, parents are not REQUIRED to be
involved with the PTA; however, we are hoping that parents will
choose to join the PTA because they want to, not because they
have to.
·
The PTA supports the parents and teachers at Perkins Elementary
and often supplements funds for needs that may otherwise go
unmet.
·
The PTA is committed to Perkins on a personal and communal
level, now we need the commitment from Perkins.
·
We currently have nearly 100% teacher participation, but this is
not the Teacher Association, we need more parents!
·
There is no question; the PTA has affected every child at
Perkins Elementary school. Please help us to help your
children, and to continue to make this one of the best schools
in Pinellas County (and maybe all of Florida)!
·
If
you are a member, ask other parents in your child’s classroom if
they have joined.
·
If
we all work together, no one is overburdened, and no one group
of people is making all of the decisions. We want to hear what
you think! What is important to you, what does our school need,
how do you think we should address that need? We can do this,
and we can look good doing it! JOIN NOW!
October 31, 2008: Costume Parade and festivities
As parents come in to see the Costume Parade and join in the
festivities, they will be able to check a board at the entrance
to the school with a tally of each classroom: the number
of students, and the number of students whose families have
joined the PTA. No names will be used; this is just a
visual aid to help us all understand the distribution of
responsibility throughout the school. There will be a PTA table
set up near the board to take your $5.00 membership fee if you
have not already joined. A winner, based on the most membership,
will be announced from each grade on Monday November 3, 2008.
Winners will receive a classroom popcorn party
We had a great time at our October PTA meeting! For those
parents and teachers that were unable to attend, we hope that we
will see you next time! Here is a brief overview of what we
did:
· The Mad Scientist fielded questions and captivated the adults
and children with some sample experiments from the program. For
more information about the Mad Scientist, check out the SAC
page!
· The highly sought after TYE-DYED
Perkins tee shirts were sold;
the next available date of purchase will be Saturday October 25th
at the Fall Festival. Supplies are limited!!! Thank you to
Linda Worley for her talented work on these shirts.
· Parents enjoyed the smooth, full–bodied flavor of Kawha
Coffee! Kawha Coffee located at 475 2nd Street North
(downtown St. Petersburg), will be donating coffee for all of
our meetings.
Please remember: THERE WILL BE NO
PTA MEETING ON TUESDAY NOVEMBER 4! The PTA is a non-partisan
organization; however, we encourage every adult at Perkins to
vote. This is the perfect opportunity for parents to share with
their children the awesome power and responsibility of voting,
and their own definition of what it means to live in a
democracy.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday December 2 featuring the Live Safe Program: more information on this
program and the presenter in the following weeks!
Keep in touch: If you have any questions, comments, or
suggestions the board members can be contacted via email. Email
addresses are listed above.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you….
Your PTA
September 9 Meeting
Written by Natalie Giocondo
ngiocondo@gmail.com
Thank you to everyone who attended
the first PTA meeting of this school year. For those of you who
were unable to attend, we missed your input and hope that we
will see you at our next meeting on Tuesday October 7, 2008 at
6:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room. During our October meeting
we will have the opportunity to get a “sneak peak” at the Mad
Scientist who begins our after school science program here this
October. We will also be sampling delicious coffee from Kawah
Coffee (a local coffee vendor).
We had two guest speakers at our
September meeting: Our Sally Foster representative fielded
questions about our fundraiser and about prize distribution.
Carolyn Willett, SAC chair, spoke about the upcoming Mad
Scientist program that will start this October and is available
after school to any student wishing to participate (there is a
fee, and scholarships are available).
The PTA board introduced themselves
and shared what their function was in the PTA. Natalie
Giocondo, secretary, spoke about the upcoming membership drive
and the Popcorn Party Prize given to one class from each grade
based on the most memberships: thank you to Carolyn Willett for
suggesting the competition be per grade. Linda Worley presented
the purposed 2008-2009 budget and fielded questions about the
budget, which was put to a vote and passed. Jaime Eagan spoke
briefly about volunteers and the PTA’s advocacy roles. Laurie
Lather spoke of upcoming events and festivals.
PTA is a grassroots movement, please
encourage other parents to join, each person makes a
difference! We want our PTA to be a fair representation of our
students and teachers, at this time, not all classes are being
represented!
Just a reminder that the PTA offers
childcare for each meeting, Elizabeth Valentine, the school
counselor’s daughter, takes the children to an adjoining room
for games and fun.
We will see you October 7th at 6:30
pm!
