Last chance to blog Ms Smith in Nova Scotia
The adventure began September 21.
One of our teachers, Ann Smith, technology specialist,
headed to Nova Scotia, Canada, to work with scientists. This
project was monitoring the mammal population to determine the
impact of climate change on them.
The
Earthwatch
Institute is fully funding this Live in the Field
project. Earthwatch is an international organization whose
mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field
research and education to promote the understanding and action
necessary for a sustainable environment. Part of their mission
is to help educate students by providing opportunities for
teachers to go work in the field with scientists and
researchers.
While Mrs. Smith is in the field,
she is communicating with classrooms on a daily basis using her
blogging website, Skype and e-mail. She will be there through
October 3 but you can still access the blog after that.
Please follow along and share the
adventure at

Perkins gifted teacher Anne
Weller has challenged everyone to give Ms Smith 10,000 hits
on her blog before she returns. Please go to the above address,
click on a Comments link, and leave a comment. And send the address to
friends and family all over the world asking them to do the
same. Ms Weller is distributing a form,
download here,
so students can log whom they have sent the address to, and be
entered for a drawing.
Last February, Ms Weller went on a
similar trip, tracking leatherback turtles in Cost Rica. You can
read Ms Weller's blog from that trip at
www.earthwatchxtreme.org/LFF/Weller.

Emotional Behavior Disorder classes
Do you have an extra classroom
snack available? Have you bought too many 'buy one, get one free' deals
lately?
Our Emotional Behavior Disorder (EBD) classes have requested any small packaged
foods or drinks for use in their classrooms. Nutritious snacks are part of their curriculum and are used as reinforcers for
good academic and behavioral choices, and donations would be graciously
accepted. Examples:
-
Crackers - graham, Ritz, oyster
-
Cheese-its, saltines, etc.
-
Pretzels, popcorn
-
Peanut butter & Jelly

Science
Camps at the Science Center of Pinellas County
Science workshop camps
for students in K-12 are available during winter, spring and summer
school breaks. More than 2,000 children take part each year. Camps
generally run 5 days Mon. - Fri. 9-3:30, with extended care available
8:30-5:30 (check for current terms and costs) and there is normally a
choice of several camp agendas in each age range. These camps are a
great complement to the arts syllabus at Perkins, especially since
Science is now an FCAT subject.
