Homework Policy

I will be assigning homework because I believe it is important that students begin to develop good homework habits in early grades. Also, homework gives students the opportunity to practice what we have taught in class, prepare for upcoming lessons, extend and generalize concepts, and learn responsibility.

I will assign homework Monday through Thursday nights. A weekly homework assignment sheet will be sent home on the first school day of each week. Students will also keep track of homework in their daily planners. Parents need to initial planners nightly in the “School Talk” section. If you would like to write a note, please do so in this section also. I will check planners and homework folders each morning.

Homework should take your child from 15 to 30 minutes to complete. Special assignments and long-range projects will have a Long Range Planner with mini-deadlines. Some of these assignments may be in place of the homework, but some may be in addition to it. Unless otherwise noted, all homework assignments are due the following school day (In case of illness: as soon as possible). If a legitimate reason for not completing homework arises, send a note on the day it is due stating the reason it was not completed. ( This can be written in your child’s planner.)

I expect homework to be neat and students to do the work on their own. They should ask for help only after they have given it their best effort. Homework will cover concepts and skills that have already been taught in class.

To help your child do his/her best, help him/her find a quiet place to work, help decide on the best time of day to do assignments, and make doing homework a priority at home.

If there is trouble with an assignment, check to see that the directions are understood. If your child still has difficulty, you may help with the first part of the assignment. If your child still cannot complete the homework, do not do the work for him/her. Write a note explaining what you believe to be the problem.

I encourage you to praise your child each night. I believe parents’ words of support are an important way to motivate children to do well in school.

I will check for returned assignments each morning. I also believe in the value our positive support plays in motivating good study habits. I will give praise and other class incentives when homework is done properly and on time. This will also be reflected on the report card under “Completes homework on time”.

If your child does not complete and return homework on a regular basis, I will contact you. It is important that we work together to make sure your child develops the study habits that will be needed in later grades.
